chassisbird asked: Uh, the folks discussing autistic characters who you just tried to call out are all autistic. You just implied that autistics can’t have opinions while ignoring our linguistic preferences. (Not “with autism”, but “autistic”.) Please stop talking on behalf of autistic people, please. I get what you’re trying to do and I appreciate your good intentions, but you don’t seem to regard us as people.
I have a family member WITH AUTISM. Autism does not define him, so I don’t refer to him as autistic. I thought the whole “people first language” was preferred, but whatever. I wasn’t trying to put down anyone, or say that opinions aren’t valued. Honestly.
And I DID NOT say that autistics can’t be cute. I said I didn’t feel like autism was cute. Society has made look at quirks and stims as something to admire/laugh at/adore. Sometimes they can be. But other times, for instance when an individual is trapped because OCD type behaviors keep them from participating in ANYTHING.. well, autism is not attractive.
If I saw a post that said “I just saw a tv show with with character suffering from bi-polar disorder.. she’s really f’ed up. Who else can we think of with mental illness?” I’d think that would be in really poor taste. Same thing with a physical disability. I’m not seeing representation.. but rather a group out to make fun of others.
So.. if you’re autistic, or have autism… I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. Please try to see my opinion as a part time care-taker for an individual with autism, who is frustrating as all hell, but very loved (and cute).
Like, I can’t right now with this. I’m going to fucking explode.
