Research at the University of Newcastle has revealed that black Romans were found in all ranks of the army and that most Roman armies were multi-ethnic. Some Roman emperors, such as Septimius Severus (145-211), were North African in origin. Severus probably marched through the Low Countries with his army in 209 and died in England in 211.

While he may not have been a black African himself, the Historia Augusta does mention a black Ethiopian who served in his army in England. Objects on which black Romans are depicted have also been found in England, although not in the Netherlands as far as is known.

In later Netherlandish art there are certainly many representations of black Romans and black Roman emperors.

The following phase in European history, the Middle Ages, is considerably more important in establishing the roles and image of black people at courts. From the eight century onwards there was a real danger that the Moors, or Muslims, who included many blacks amongst their numbers, would conquer and colonise Europe. They proved formidable opponents.

In subsequent centuries the Moors held sway over the Iberian peninsula, Sicily and Corsica. Both negative and positive representations of black people appear in northern European art and literature from this period of Moorish threat and conquest. Positive representations of black people were inspired by the crusaders’ discovery of Christian Ethiopians living in Jerusalem.

When it further emerged that both Ethiopia and Nubia were ruled by Christian kings who were also fighting the Muslims, European crusaders and potentates became increasingly interested in these two lands, believing that they had finally found strong black Christian allies to help them against the Moors.

This idea persisted in art. In Les Très Riches Heures du Jean Duc de Berry(c. 1416) for example, an illumination by the Limburg brothers features three realistic black monks at the foot of the holy cross.

I hate how reactionary and petty people get with the very idea that black people and other PoC were in Europe. There is proof we were there doing all sorts of things in Europe but they would still rather pretend otherwise or (when they can’t) completely make up history to make their argument seem less like something completely nasty (see above). Like, instead of pretending that they are being wronged by this discussion they could just be like, “Oh wow, I didn’t realize how whitewashed history is.” But that would be too much to ask?

Personally, ‘I have noticed that dark skin is almost always associated with evil and people claim that its “not racist”. There’s no question that black people were in Europe in various points in history, but people still seem invested in doing all they can to prove otherwise. These same people don’t notice the similarities between their arguments and the statements used to keep blacks and other PoC out of fantasy works.

There is a direct correlation between whitewashing history and racism in the fantasy genre. The excuse is that we either would be too anachronistic or that the stories are based on European myths. However, many of these same stories borrow from the very cultures they are claiming “don’t fit the period” as well and no one addresses that fact. Just like how, throughout history, our cultures inspired Europeans but people will still argue that we (as human beings) could not have been there.

Like, your fine with us being monsters described with offensive stereotypes but us existing as human beings alongside you in any way shape or form makes you so angry. People act like we’ve just sullied their history by the very possibility that someone who shares our racial background might have been there at some point. I don’t understand how wanting a more accurate portrayal of PoC in period pieces is too much to ask.

Reblogging because awesome art (Self Evident Truths series by S. Ross Browne) but also good insights. There was a lot of arguments that I deleted because it got really crowded on this post and I wanted to add a few thoughts.

It’s always shocking to me when people defend a 100% or 99.999999% white fantasy world. You really ascribe to a fictional world where things like dragons, magic, and elves are par for the course but god forbid 1 or more non-white people show up! That would really ruin the realism, eh?

Also, if us Asian people even appear we’re often some gross amalgamation of disparate Asian cultures lumped into one “Asian” parallel fantasy culture, or we’re viewed exclusively through the lens of Orientalism. Gross.

For progressive scifi/fantasy fiction I’ve heard that Octavia Butler is good. She’s one of the most prominent female authors of color in the genre. Sadly while I love Margaret Atwood’s exploration of dystopic gender relations in The Handmaid’s Tale, I felt her portrayal of a mysterious, submissive Asian beauty in Oryx and Crake to be basically textbook Orientalism. :[ It disappointed me so much since otherwise I think she is a fabulous author.

Ok but you also deleted all the photo I’d supplied of ACTUAL PAINTINGS from Medieval/Renaissance Europe to show people that those paintings DO EXIST, and People of Color LIVED IN EUROPE during those times AND earlier, and generally shifted the argument away from FACT and back toward speculation about fantasy literature and whether or not people of color “should” be included in popular fantasy lit.

The whole point of this was to demonstrate that THESE PAINTING JAR VIEWERS NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE “UNREALISTIC” BUT BECAUSE THE PAINTINGS THAT RESEMBLE THESE FROM EUROPEAN ART HISTORY ARE RARELY OR NEVER SEEN.

THIS IS ABOUT THE RETROACTIVE WHITEWASHING OF HISTORY.

I sometimes feel like I’m the luckiest person on earth, and considering some of what I’ve been through and *still* go through…a lot of why I blog is to try and SHOW people who are going through some of what I’ve been through that life can change and get better, and that you might be able to snatch some happiness from the jaws of hate and mental illness and shitty people and abuse and gaslighting…that sometimes you can build a life that is *so much YOU* and become who you’re supposed to be. Yes, I have. XD I always feel bad when I ask for recc’s because…well….

And this doesn’t include the 1-2k books I had before my divorce about 7 years ago, in which I lost *all* my books i’d acquired up til then. The Abhorsen series is one I used to own and reread a few times. I plan to purchase it again at some point, partly because it was alright (although strangely detached), and partly because the cover illustrations are fucking gorgeous.

(also, I have more books, these are just the ones i happen to have photos on my desktop of :0)

This extraordinary portrait depicts Velázquez’s slave of Moorish descent, who served as an assistant in his workshop. Painted in Rome, it was displayed publicly beneath the portico of the Pantheon in March 1650. Velázquez clearly intended to impress his Italian colleagues with his unique artistry. Indeed we are told that the picture “gained such universal applause that in the opinion of all the painters of the different nations everything else seemed like painting but this alone like truth”. Juan de Pareja became a painter in his own right and was freed by Velázquez in 1654.
